EGENES, Andrew G.

IL 11th Inf Co F. Residence: Lisbon, Kendall County, Illinois. Born 28 Apr 1832 in Rosendal, Kvinnherad, Norway, the son of Gotskalk Andersen Egenaes and Christi Mekkelsdatter Fladebö. Arrived in New York in 1854. Civil War: Farmer. Age 29. Unmarried. Blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, 6’1”. Enlisted for three months on 28 May 1861 at Villa Ridge, Illinois (near Cairo), in Company F of the Illinois 11th Infantry. Mustered out 30 Jul 1861 at Birds Point, Missouri (near Cairo, Illinois). Private. Enlisted for three years in the Illinois 91st at Lisbon on 8 Aug 1862. Mustered 8 Sep 1862, at Camp Butler, Illinois, and assigned to Company E as a Corporal. Captured by rebel forces (Morgan’s Cavalry) on 27 Dec 1862 at Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and paroled the next day. Reduced to ranks 21 Jul 1863. Sick, apparently from dysentery, in hospital at New Orleans, Louisiana, during much of 1864. Rejoined his company from hospital on 28 Nov 1864. Mustered out with his company 12 Jul 1865 at Mobile, Alabama. Post war: Married 27 May 1866 in Yorkville, Kendall County, Illinois, to Margrethe Johnsdatter Mehl. They moved to Norway, Benton County, Iowa. In 1881, they moved to McCallsburg, Story County, Iowa. He died 30 Aug 1908, and was buried in Story City.
