Civil War: Some time during his service, he transferred to the Wisconsin 3rd Infantry. Post war: On 28 Dec 1873, at Blanchardville, he married Mary Anna Maria Christena Larson (1858-1944). Taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863; but was with his company at Chattanooga, 19 Nov 1863. Sent over to Company H at Whiteside, Tennessee, on 1 Jan 1865, and to Company I in the 13th Infantry. Mustered out at Madison, Wisconsin, 21 Mar 1865. Entered on the Roll of Honor of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps, for showing “the greatest courage and ability” at the Battle of Stone’s River, Tennessee, in Dec 1862. Post war: He married and had ten children. Following several moves within Dane County, he and his family eventually settled at Stoughton, Wisconsin. He died there and is buried there. Said he was treated for chronic diarrhea and for scurvy and stomach cramps. Reported to have taken part in battles at Mississippi River Island No. 10, Perryville, Stone’s River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. Enlisted 20 May 1861. Mustered 8 Jun 1861. Private. Promoted to Corporal 5 Aug 1862. Re-enlisted 4 Jan 1864, re-mustered 2 Feb 1864; transferred into Co C 3rd Veteran Infantry Battalion. Transferred into Co I, 2nd & 3rd Veteran Infantry Consolidated, from Co C, 3rd Battalion. Mustered out 12 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Post war: Married 16 Oct 1866 to Emily (Laumann) Bunker, a widow whose husband had died in 1865. She and Sever had been close friends before the war. After the war, he went to Lansing, Iowa; then to Bloomington, Minnesota. In Bloomington, he became postmaster. Elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1887. Enlisted for three years on 28 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered there on 10 Jan 1862. Corporal. Detained by civil authorities in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on 1 Feb 1862. The Sheriff of Waukesha County subsequently reported him pardoned on 25 Mar 1862. Reduced to Private on 15 May 1862. He rejoined the 15th Regiment at Mississippi River Island No. 10, on 4 Jun 1862. Taken prisoner at La Vergne, Tennessee, 29 Dec 1862, and sent to St Louis to be exchanged. His parole was declared invalid, and he was sent to his Company at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 13 Jan 1863.
