Cited for courage in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, 27 Jun 1864. Mustered out with Company H at Chattanooga on 13 Feb 1865. He is entered on the Roll of Honor of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps. On 22 May 1867, he was named Brevet (Honorary) Captain with rank from 27 Jun 1864 in recognition of bravery displayed in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, when he ran outside the defences under heavy fire and carried a wounded comrade back inside the earthworks and out of danger.
