IL 19th Inf Co H. Residence: Moline, Rock Island, Illinois. Born in Sweden. Civil War: Age 36. Blacksmith. Married. Blue eyes, Light hair, light complexion, 5’6½”. Enlisted 29 Jun 1861 at Moline, Illinois, and mustered in Chicago, Illinois, that same day. Private. Discharged for disability 19 Feb 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee. Sources: (ILSA reel two p 31)

GUSTAVESON, Charles

WI 15th Inf Co F. Residence: Eaton, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Gustaveson was born 1821 in Sweden at Ulrichshavn in Elsborg. He was for two years a non-commissioned officer in the Elfsborg Regiment and for three years in the Royal Horse Guards. He came to America in 1846. Married on 14 Jun 1851 to Ambjør Stephansdatter Brækken. Served for one year and seven months as a private in the 15th U. S. Volunteers during the Mexican War. Civil War: Married. Age 39. Captain Gustaveson received his commission on 28 October 1861, and was accepted into service with 40 men who had elected him their Captain. He took command of Company F on 14 Jan 1862. He was sick at Bird's Point, Missouri. Wounded in the battle at Stone's River, Tennessee, 30 Dec 1862. Taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863 and sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia. While being moved, he escaped on 25 Sep 1864 near Macon, Georgia, and rejoined his Regiment at Atlanta, Georgia, 29 Sep 1864. Mustered out on 13 Jun 1865 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, his term of service having expired. Promoted to Major on 25 Feb 1867 with rank from 21 Feb 1865. Post war: He operated a farm near Mosfield, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He also became Sheriff of his county. He was granted a pension of $20 a month because of chronic rheumatism. He died 5 Apr 1894 at Manitowoc. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery` Manitowoc.
