WI Hv Arty 1st Reg Co C. Residence: Winchester, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Born “Kittel Halvorsen Kjeldahl” on 15 Dec 1846 at Tuddal, Hjartdal, Telemark, Norway. Came to America with his parents at age two. Settled first near Whitewater, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Civil War: Age 17. Unmarried. Farmer. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’6½”. Enlisted for three years on 5 Sep 1863 at Winchester. Mustered 1 Oct 1863 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Private. Fought in the Battle of Mission Ridge. Wounded. Absent from his unit in October 1864 because he was serving on board the river steamer “Missionary”. Promoted to Corporal 24 Mar 1865. Mustered out with his battery on 21 Sep 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Post war: He homesteaded near Belgrade in Stearns County, Minnesota. Elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1885. Elected as a Populist to U.S. Congress in 1890. Defeated in 1892. In 1907, he was living in Marlow, South Dakota. Died in Havana, North Dakota, on 12 Jul 1936 and is buried at Big Grove Church Cemetery near Brooten, Minnesota.
