This company was at the Second Battle of New Ulm, 23 Aug 1862. Company then reorganized on 27 Aug 1862 as The Scandinavian Guards, which served in Nicollet County for 21 days. Private. US Navy. Born in Sweden. First World War: Went down in the naval patrol boat “Tampa”, sunk 26 Sep 1918 in the Bristol Channel off the coast of England, victim of a German U-Boat. The “Tampa”, formerly the Coast Guard cutter “Miami”, was torpedoed while escorting a convoy. Ten officers and 102 enlisted men, most of them taken over from the Coast Guard service to man the “Tampa”, one British army officer and five civilian employes were on board. There were no survivors. Came to America in 1855, and to Koshkonong, Dane County, Wisconsin, in 1856. Civil War: Commissioned 11 Nov 1861 at Dane County, Wisconsin. Mustered at Madison, 13 Feb 1862. Regimental Surgeon. Wife's name Alberta Ulfers. She traveled with her husband during the war and worked in his hospitals tending the sick and wounded. Dr. Hansen was the first physician to serve the Wisconsin Fifteenth. In January 1862, Dr. Stephen O. Himoe became the chief doctor and Hansen became his assistant. Hansen resigned on 20 Oct 1863. Post war: In 1866, Hansen went back to Norway and became district doctor in Romsdalen. According to his 1879 pension record, he still carried a musket ball in his arm. Discharged from the service 24 Feb 1865 at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Post war: Married Martha Knudsdatter 17 Mar 1866 at Decorah, Iowa. Nine children. Lived in Winneshiek and Chickasaw counties in Iowa. Carpenter. Moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he died 25 May 1890 of pulmonary consumption. Age 45. Buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. His widow, receiving pension, returned to Decorah. She died 26 Jul 1929 and is buried in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. He was younger brother of Augustus Hanson; see his entry for battles. When he was 18, his father died and he took over running his family’s farm. Civil War: Age 24. Married. Enrolled 3 Dec 1861 at Waterford, Wisconsin. Commissioned First Lieutenant 22 Nov 1861, effective from the 19th. Mustered 2 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. When Captain Fredrick Berg resigned, Hanson took command of Company C. He was promoted to Captain at Clear Creek, Mississippi, 23 Jun 1863, effective from 12 Jun. He took part in all the Regiment’s battles and skirmishes. In the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on 19 Sep 1863, as the regiment advanced, the blade of his sword was broken by a bullet. During a short rest, he showed the hilt to Colonel Johnson and said, “This is getting to be hot work”. A short while later, in confusion, his company was fired upon by their own lines, and he was hit, shot in his head. He was taken prisoner and brought to a prison in Atlanta, Georgia, where he died of his wounds on 13 Oct 1863. Buried in National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia; section A, grave 1070. Pension records show him suffering “valvular insufficiency of the heart”. Hanson died of a heart attack in 1915, and is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven, Minnesota. Named Brevet (Honorary) Captain on 7 Jun 1867 with rank from 19 Sep 1863 in recognition of the bravery and courage he displayed in the Battle of Chickamauga. The 15th was under a strong attack and had to fall back. As it did so, the Regiment’s standard bearer was seriously wounded and the flag fell. Private Hanson, exposing himself to murderous fire, ran forward and rescued the flag from the hands of the Rebels.
