They came to the Pine Lake settlement in Wisconsin, and by 1849 they were in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County. Civil War: Farmer. Age 27. Unmarried. Blue eyes, white hair, light complexion, 5’7½”. Drafted. Enrolled for one year on 22 Sep 1864 at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Mustered the same day. Private. Mustered out 13 Jun 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Post war: Married Thorbia. Five children. He became a farmer near River Falls, Pierce County, Wisconsin. Died 1916. Discharged from the service 19 Jul 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. Post war: On 9 Dec 1870, he married Sigvi “Sarah” Severtsen in Colfax, Wisconsin. In 1871, the couple homesteaded north of Montevideo, Minnesota. They had four children. In 1879, Carl left his family, moved to Campbell, Nebraska, changed his name to Charley Johnson (Jansen), and married a woman who used the names “Mary” and “Jennie”, who had gone there with him from Minnesota. They had five children. Helgeson died 27 Aug 1910, and was buried in the military cemetery at the Presidio, San Francisco, California, grave 1458, west side new addition. Deserted on 31 Mar 1863, but was back on 14 Nov 1864. Judged unfit for service and was discharged on 16 Oct 1864 at Columbus, Kentucky. Post war: Died 5 Jun 1871 in Riceland Township, Freeborn County, of consumption contracted while in the army. He is buried in the East Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery. MN 1st Reg Hv Arty Co B. Residence: Newburg, Fillmore County, Minnesota. Born 11 Feb 1827 in Nummedal, Norway, son of Herleik Olsen Holtan and Turid Gunnarsdatter Lande. He came to America from Flesberg, Buskerud, on “Tricolor”, which sailed from Christiania and arrive in New York on 30 Jul 1847. He came to Newark Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. On 30 Mar 1850 he married Birgith Larsdatter Hougen, who died 17 Mar 1885. Fourteen children. Civil War: Age 37. Enrolled 29 Sep 1864. Mustered the same day. Private. Discharged from the service with his company, 17 Jun 1865. Post war: In 1890, he was living in Mabel, Fillmore County. In 1902, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Christopher married a second time to a widow, Reinholdine Torgerson, who had come to America in 1881. Christopher and she had one child, Cyrus. At age 17, he settled on a farm near Linden, Brown County, Minnesota. Civil War: Age 22. Enrolled 9 Oct 1861. Mustered 20 Dec 1861. Private. Re-enlisted 1 Jan 1864. Promoted to Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant. Promoted to Brevet (Honorary) Second Lieutenant on 26 Jun 1865. Discharged from the service with his regiment, 19 Jul 1865. Post war: He lived in Madelia, Minnesota. Elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1877 and to the State Senate in 1879. Married twice. Children.
