WI 42nd Inf Co A. Residence: Scandinavia, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Born “Gjert Hermansen Øvrenæs” on 26 Feb 1825 at Holt, Aust Agder, Norway, son of Herman Eriksen and Ellen Svendsdatter. He came to America on the brig “Juno”, which sailed from Arendal, Aust Agder, 4 Jul 1849 and arrived in New York on 18 Aug 1849. He came to the Winchester settlement, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and later moved to Iola Township, Waupaca County. He was married to Ragnild Christiansdatter Øvrebøen (1836-?). Four children. Civil War: Farmer. Age 38. Married. Gray eyes, black hair, dark complexion, 5’10”. Enlisted for one year on 29 Aug 1864 at Waupaca, Wisconsin. Mustered 1 Sep 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $100. Civil War: Age 18. Private. Enlisted for 100 days 19 May 1864. Mustered 10 Jun 1864 at Davenport, Iowa. Private. Mustered out 23 Sep 1864, Davenport, Iowa, expiration of term of service. Post war: He was married on 3 Jul 1871 at Ridgeway, Iowa, to Aase/Ana Knudsdatter Alfson. Eleven children. In 1880 he homesteaded in the Dakota Territory. Lived at DeLamere, North Dakota. Died 8 Jan 1924 at Hamlin, Herman Township, Sargent County, North Dakota. Buried at Immanuel Lutheran churchyard, DeLamere.
