US Navy. Born in Sweden. First World War: Went down in the naval patrol boat “Tampa”, sunk 26 Sep 1918 in the Bristol Channel off the coast of England, victim of a German U-Boat. The “Tampa”, formerly the Coast Guard cutter “Miami”, was torpedoed while escorting a convoy. Ten officers and 102 enlisted men, most of them taken over from the Coast Guard service, one British army officer and five civilian employes were on board. There were no survivors. They and two small sons came to America from Bamble on “Bowditch”, which sailed from Havre, France, and arrived in New York on 8 Aug 1846. They went first to Norway Township, Racine County, Wisconsin, where Anna died soon after their arrival. Nils and his children moved to Ossian, Winneshiek County, Iowa. He married on 23 Jun 1859 to Anne Maria Olsdatter Stensland. Civil War: Post war: He died 13 Jan 1911 and was buried in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery, Winneshiek County. Served on the “Seminole”, the “North Carolina”, and the “Wachusette”. Discharged from the service 19 Dec 1864 at Boston, Massachusetts. Post war: He assumed the name “Oliver Lawson”. Married 15 Jun 1869 at Magnolia, New Jersey, to Susanna Harley. She died 7 Oct 1880. Three children, Edward, Frank and Oliver. Married 12 Jun 1883 to Catharine L. Beecher. Four children, George, Kendall, Carl and Raymond. Lived most of his life in Philadelphia. At the time of his death, 30 Sep 1923. Larsen was receiving a pension of $50 a month. He is buried at Hedding M. E. Church cemetery in Bell Mawr, New Jersey. On 24 Feb 1898 John married Ingeborg Sophi Johnson (who was born in Norway 24 May 1835 and who died 24 Apr 1920 at Lake Stevens, Wisconsin). Sometime after 1898, they moved to Everett, Washington. Discharged from the service 1 Jun 1866. Post war: Moved to Dane Prairie Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, where it was said that he harvested the first crop in that township. In 1868, he married Thora Olson. Twelve children. He died of yellow jaundice at his home in Dane Prairie on Sunday, 10 Oct 1926. Age 84. Born 28 Sep 1836 at Gjerpen near Skien, Telemark, Norway, son of Lars Larsen Svarttangen and Ingeborg Gurine Thorsdatter Ballestad. He came to America with his parents and five siblings on “Bowditch”, which sailed from Havre, France, and reached New York on 8 Aug 1846. They went first to Pine Lake, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. By 1850, they had moved to Newton Township, Manitowoc County, and by 1860, they were in Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc County. Civil War: Unmarried. Age 25. Enlisted for three years on 21 Oct 1861 at Manitowoc and mustered 12 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Designated Company wagon master. Left behind with supply train from Stevenson, Alabama, in October 1863. Sick in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 11 Nov 1863. Mustered out with Company on 13 Jan 1865 at Chattanooga. “Was named a Brevet (Honorary) Captain on 4 Apr 1867 with rank from 19 Sep 1863 in recognition of bravery he displayed in the battle of Chickamauga. When his unit was forced to fall back he helped one of the Regiment’s officers, who had been wounded and was in danger of falling into the hands of the Rebels, safely out of the fray of the battle at a time when most men found they had more than enough to do taking care of themselves.” Post war: He moved in 1868 to Ben Wade Township, Pope County, Minnesota. Served as County Commissioner and as Treasurer. On 23 May 1870, he married Ragnild Johannesdatter (1844-1912). Eight children. In 1902, they moved to Walla Walla, Washington.
