US Navy. Born 27 Jun 1832 in Sweden. Civil War: Age 29. Entered the Navy on 13 Jun 1862 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Served as a coxswain on the U.S.S. Macedonia. Was said to have been with Admiral Farragut in the Battle of the Mississippi river. Discharged 12 Jan 1868 at Philadelphia. Post war: He moved to Mt. Vernon, South Dakota. Promoted to Sergeant 15 May 1865. Chief Musician. Transferred to Non-Commissioned Staff 1 Aug 1865. Mustered out 27 Sep 1865. Post war: Herman Lawson, Reed’s Landing, Wabasha County, was granted a pension of $24 a month because of the amputation of his right thigh, resulting from a wound to his right hip; and because of the wound of his right thumb.
