WI 15th Inf Co K. Residence: East Troy, Cast Iron, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Born 1847 at Vinje, Telemark (or Vinje, Kristiansand Parish), Norway. Came to America with his parents in 1860. Civil War: Age 18. Carpenter. Blue eyes, sandy hair, light complexion, 5’4”. Enlisted for three years on 12 Jan 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered there on 17 Feb 1864. Private. Joined K Company at Strawberry Plains, Virginia, 31 Mar 1864. Wounded in his left hand at New Hope Church, Georgia, 27 May 1864. Sent to New Albany, Indiana. Transferred to WI 13th Inf Co K on 10 Jan 1865. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, 3 Jun 1865. Post war: He lived in Willmar, Minnesota. Became a banker there. Was elected to the Minnesota legislature in 1870 and to the state senate in 1874. In May 1882 he was granted a pension of $6 a month because of the gun shot wound to his left hand. He became Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota in 1887. Was left behind in Nashville on 26 Dec 1862 because of illness. Became acting Quartermaster of Regiment in May 1863. On furlough in Nov 1863. Promoted to Captain at Strawberry Plains on 20 Apr 1864, effective from the 7th, in command of the company, succeeding Captain Hans Hanson, who had been killed in action.
