SWANSON, Anton

MN Lt Arty 3rd Batt. Born 6 Oct 1842 in Gremstad, Norway, son of Engebret Swanson. Came to America in 1848, first to Milwaukee, then to Janesville, and finally, in 1852, to Hudson, Wisconsin. Civil War: Age 21. Enlisted at Hudson. Mustered there on 31 Mar 1865. Private. Assigned to meet the Sioux. This battery built a fort, called Fort Wadsworth, on the James River, Dakota Territory. The Fort was later renamed Sisseton. Discharged in late 1865; mustered out 26 Feb 1866. Post war: Returned to Hudson. Worked as a cabinet maker and carpenter for the Western Wisconsin Railroad in Hudson. Became General Foreman of the Car Shops. Married in 1872 to Cornelia Evenson (1850-1920). Six children. SWANSON, John

US Navy. Born in 1842 in Sweden. Civil War: Enlisted from Massachusetts. Seaman. Awarded the Medal of Honor. On board the “U.S.S. Santiago de Cuba” during the assault on Fort Fisher on 15 Jan 1865, as one of a boat crew detailed to one of the generals on shore, Swanson bravely entered the fort in the assault and accompanied his party in carrying dispatches at the height of the battle.
