He was then discharged and commissioned Assistant Surgeon, with rank of Captain, and he served out the war at the Tyler hospital. Post war: He died about 1878 in Bosque County, Texas. On 7 Jul 1858, he married Christine Friedriche Smith (1837-1912). Seven children. Civil War: Age 34. Married. On 27 Sep 1861, he was authorized by Wisconsin Governor Randall to recruit a company of troops, which he soon did, becoming its captain. Appointed Captain 11 Nov 1861. Commissioned 12 Nov 1861. Mustered 22 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. He tired of life at war and resigned 14 Oct 1862. Post war: Became a policeman in Chicago after the war; eventually went to Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa, where he ran a cooper business. He died 18 Oct 1881 in Rogers Park, Illinois. Enlisted for three years on 5 Nov 1861 at Scandinavia and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 20 Dec 1861. Private. Sick in Bridgeport, Alabama, on the 15th, 16th and 18th of September 1863. Seriously wounded in his right hand at Resaca, Georgia, 16 May 1864, and was in Nashville, Tennessee, 27 May 1864. Sent to a hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Discharged from the service there for his wounds, 2 Feb 1865. In 1866, Torkilson moved to Glenwood, Minnesota. He became Sheriff and was three times Register of Deeds in Pope County, Minnesota.
