IA 12th Inf Co B. Residence: Houston County, Minnesota. Born 16 Oct 1839 at Klæbo, Norway. Came to America through Quebec to Houston County, about 1860. Civil War: Age 24. Enlisted in 23 Nov 1861 at Dubuque, Iowa. Mustered there the same day. Private. Took part in the battles of Fort Henry, Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee. Was captured at Shiloh on 6 Apr 1862 and sent to a Confederate prison in Macon, Georgia. Exchanged. Returned to Iowa. Rejoined his regiment at Vicksburg. Re-enlisted in 1863. Took part in the defense of Memphis and the battle for Nashville. After four years in the service, he was mustered out on 20 Jul 1866 at Memphis, Tennesse. He went back to Houston County to Spring Grove Township. In 1867, he married Olena Olson, said to have been a sister of Civil War soldiers Iver, John and Lorentz Landsem. Four children. In 1878, he moved to Norman County. Lived in Halstad, Minnesota. Was said to have received a pension of $8 a month for vertigo, headaches and back problems. Died at Helstad in 1932 at age 92. Enlisted for three years on 26 Feb 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Mustered 1 Mar 1864 at Camp Randall, Madison. Bounty $300, $240 still due at muster out. Private. Joined Company H at Little Rock, Arkansas, on 3 May 1864, from the recruiting depot at Madison. Absent sick at Little Rock, Arkansas, general hospital since 4 Oct 1864. Absent sick in general hospital at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, since 4 Oct 1864. Mustered out 10 May 1865 at Prairie du Chien.
